Adding a modern twist to a classic Victorian

When the owners of this classic Victorian home in La Crosse came to Onalaska design expert Liz Granum, they had a few needs in mind. They were looking for a family-style kitchen with island seating, and a functional design that would allow the mother to supervise her children playing in the back yard while she worked in the kitchen. But they wanted to keep the historic home’s original hardwood floors.

So Liz designed them a functional space using Dura Supreme cabinetry with a Craftsman panel maple door, painted Classic White, and incorporated Cambria Quartz countertops in Summerhill. The professional series Vent-A- Hood range hood used is available for purchase through Wisconsin Building Supply.

“We moved the window to the back of the house so they could see the kids in the backyard and put soffits above the cabinets to soften the feel of the room,” she said. “It was a timeless addition to a historic gem.”

The design also included transitioning what once was a butler’s pantry to an open concept boot bench area for storage of jackets, backpacks, and winter gear. See on Houzz.
